Context

An established WooCommerce store was affected by slow page loads and unreliable checkout behaviour on mobile devices.

Challenge

The site needed measurable performance improvements without a full rebuild or interruption to trading.

Constraints

The existing theme, plugin set and production environment had to remain in service while changes were introduced incrementally.

Diagnosis

Profiling showed render-blocking assets, slow queries and server configuration limits under real concurrency.

Architecture

The remediation combined Nginx and PHP-FPM tuning, persistent object caching, conditional asset loading and targeted database indexes.

Technical decisions

The work addressed bottlenecks at the server, query and asset layers so the result would remain understandable for the client team.

Implementation

The slowest SQL paths were reviewed and indexed, render-blocking scripts were removed or deferred, and worker and buffer settings were tuned for production traffic.

Performance

Core Web Vitals and checkout responsiveness improved after the changes. Verified before-and-after figures remain under NDA.

Infrastructure

The production stack remained familiar to the client team, with no unnecessary services introduced.

Testing and QA

Changes were verified with before-and-after profiling, checkout-path testing and staged release checks.

Deployment

Updates were shipped incrementally with rollback paths and documentation for the internal team.

Results

The store became faster and more stable under load, with a more reliable checkout path. Verified metrics are available under NDA.

Engineering notes

Sustainable WooCommerce performance work starts with measurement and source-level causes: queries, assets, caching boundaries and server capacity.
