Context
A digital agency needed a repeatable accessibility programme across a large portfolio of WordPress and WooCommerce sites. The work had to support client delivery without creating a separate maintenance process.
Challenge
A broad set of live client sites had to be assessed, remediated and maintained against WCAG 2.1/2.2 Level AA while preserving existing layouts, plugins and release workflows.
Constraints
Each site was live, client-owned and already tied to specific themes, plugins and content workflows. Fixes had to remain maintainable for the agency after handoff.
Diagnosis
Automated scanners identified part of the issue set. Manual keyboard and screen-reader testing exposed additional barriers in focus states, semantic structure, form labelling, ARIA usage and tab order.
Architecture
The programme uses automated triage with axe-core and pa11y, followed by manual review. Findings are prioritised by impact, corrected at code level, retested and documented per site.
Implementation
Remediation covers PHP templates, JavaScript behaviour and theme styles: semantic landmarks, visible focus, labelled controls, contrast tokens, keyboard order and native HTML patterns wherever possible.
Accessibility
The target is WCAG Level AA on every site, verified against success criteria rather than scanner scores alone. Manual testing remains part of sign-off.
Testing and QA
Each release is checked with automated tooling, keyboard navigation and screen-reader review before delivery through the agency workflow.
Deployment
Changes move through the agency staging and release process, so production delivery follows the same controls as other client work.
Results
500+ sites have been audited or remediated for accessibility since 2021, including WCAG 2.1 and WCAG 2.2 AA work, giving the agency a repeatable accessibility service for its clients.
Engineering notes
Accessibility at this scale depends on repeatable review, code-level remediation and manual verification. Overlay widgets do not replace semantic markup, keyboard support or tested interaction patterns.
