Context
A content site had accumulated plugins, snippets and theme changes over several years, making routine updates risky.
Challenge
The site needed to remain live while its theme structure, editable content model and maintenance process were corrected.
Constraints
Content, URLs and SEO had to be preserved, and the result had to be maintainable by the internal team.
Diagnosis
The issue was structural: an unclear theme model, excessive plugin dependency and limited documentation.
Architecture
The replacement used a custom theme, ACF field groups, custom post types where needed, a lean plugin set and documented deployment steps.
Technical decisions
Editable content was moved into structured fields so non-specialist users could update the site without editing templates.
Implementation
The theme was rebuilt, content was migrated into structured fields, plugin dependency was reduced and evident maintenance risks were addressed.
Security
Reducing plugin surface and documenting update procedures lowered ongoing maintenance risk.
Deployment
The release preserved URLs and content, followed by handoff documentation for templates and deployment.
Results
The site became easier to edit, maintain and update without relying on undocumented theme changes.
Engineering notes
WordPress remediation often requires removing ambiguity: clarify ownership, reduce plugin dependency and document the editable model.
